What is a Learner Made Bulb?

Learner Made Bulbs (LMBs) are a great way to empower learners to become the instructor. Learners have access to the full power of the PlayPosit Designer, including uploading their own videos and embedding all interaction types. Use this feature to:

Terminology

This section outlines important terminology and definitions of the items that will be referenced throughout the help article.

  1. Bulb - A Bulb is an interactive video learning object created within the PlayPosit platform. PlayPosit allows content creators, in this case the learners themselves, to transform any video into an active experience for others by embedding questions, images, audio, and other media elements.
  2. LMB Assignment - The shell assignment created by the instructor for a LMB.
  3. LMB Submission - A Bulb created by a learner as a submission for a LMB assignment.
  4. Designer - The part of the platform where Bulbs are created and edited.

Best practices

This section highlights best practices and recommendations to ensure the easiest and most seamless workflow when creating a LMB in PlayPosit.

  • PlayPosit suggests making sure that learners have completed at least one PlayPosit Bulb assignment in the past to ensure that they are familiar with the platform.
  • Provide learners with access to the article on Building a Bulb in PlayPosit for easy reference.
  • If learners have access to a private video host, they may need to request a new user ID in the case that their video host user ID does not match their PlayPosit or LMS email address.
  • Note: Once a LMB has been submitted, it cannot be changed unless the instructor unlocks the learner’s submission from the LMB gradebook.

    The learner experience in PlayPosit

After a learner logs in and selects the appropriate class, follow the steps below to complete a LMB assignment:

    1. Click on the name of the LMB assignment to launch the Designer.

    2. Select a video source to upload or add a video from a video source. To crop the video, please refer to this help article

If the instructor has enabled direct video upload, the option to Upload or Record Video within the PlayPosit Designer will be available.

Note: Learners who have access to video hosts may need to request new login credentials through the Designer. Click here for more information on the specific video host.

Upload Video/Record Video directly using PlayPosit - Please note that the institution may not have purchased hosting minutes with PlayPosit and direct upload may be disabled. Contact the instructor for questions regarding direct video uploading and recording using PlayPosit.

Other video sources - Learners can access any video host that the institutional license includes. However, the easiest approach is for learners to host videos on YouTube or Vimeo and to add their content via the Input URL option. Click here to learn more about specific video hosts.

Note: If the instructor has not enabled direct video upload or disabled the use of private video hosts, the options to Input URL (works for unlisted and public YouTube videos, or public Vimeo videos) or upload MP3, will be available.

Note: Click here for information on adding captions to a Learner Made Bulb.
