What is a text-based bulb?

While PlayPosit is an interactive video platform, instructors can also create an interactive text-based bulb to add engagement to the reading material. A text-based bulb is formed by embedding the reading document into the bulb with Pause or web embed interaction, which can help learners transform their learning from passively reading to actively interacting with the content.

All types of PlayPosit interactions can be used to create the text-based bulb. Instructors can add knowledge check questions to check the learning progress, use pause interactions and web embed interactions to provide supplemental resources to the reading material, and add a discussion forum to let learners share their ideas and form a learning community.

If learners want to review the content in the bulb after completing it, there is a convenient feature for learners to review the bulb - an exportable worksheet. After learners complete the bulb, they can export a report from the completion page that contains all the information the instructor put in the interactions, all the questions in the bulb, and the learner's responses to them. This worksheet can help learners review their learning and become a handy tool for revisiting the bulb's critical information.

The workflow in this article is for creating an interactive syllabus, which encourages learners to actively participate in reading the syllabus and also check their understanding of the course. This workflow can also be used for any reading materials in the course to make them more engaging. Please see more use case examples below to see how to incorporate text-based bulbs into the course.

    1. If the text content is live on a website, please select Web Embed interaction and enter the URL for the text content.
    2. If the text content is a document, please copy the content from it and paste it into a Pause interaction.
    3. If the text content is a PDF file, please select the PDF file interaction and upload the file to the interaction.
  3. NOTES:
    • If the text content is in Google Document format, instructors can also use the web embed interaction to embed it into the bulb. Please follow the instructions in this article to embed the Google Document.
    • If the text content is in a Pause interaction, please inform learners to interact with the interactions on the sidebar and DO NOT click on the continue button on the overlaid interaction.

  4. Click on the Placement tab on the top, and click on the center of the grey area to place the text content overlay on the entire video.

Add interaction to the text content

  1. Click on Add interaction to group under the text content, and start adding in interactions.

FAQ

Why is the learner’s status still in progress after responding to all the interactions?

After learners complete all the interactions in the group with the reading materials, they still need to watch to the end of the bulb to mark the bulb as completed. Please inform the learners to ensure they see the completion screen before they close out the window.

Can I make this bulb worth 0 points for learners?

Yes! Please follow the steps below to set interactions to 0 points.

  1. Click on the triple dots icon on the top right corner of the interaction.
  2. Use the slide bar to change the points value for this interaction.

Can learners revisit the text-based bulb?

Yes! Please toggle on the Allow learners to retake the bulb upon completion option under the playback settings.

By doing so, learners can click on the Retake button on the completion screen to take the bulb again. Please note that learners will need to answer all the questions in the bulb again when they retake the bulb.
