What is a digital escape room bulb?

When taking a digital escape room bulb, learners will need to pay attention to the detail of the content, try their best to answer all the questions correctly, and collect the clues from the bulb that can help them “escape the room” and complete the bulb.

This gamified learning experience can encourage learners to participate in the learning process actively and make the learning content more appealing. Also, it will motivate learners to pay attention to the video and foster their learning outcomes.

By utilizing the feedback, retake bulb, and minimum completion score features, instructors can easily create the escape room bulb for their courses. Also, instructors can convert the bulb they are using into an attractive digital escape room with a few simple steps. Please see more detailed information and instructions on creating the escape room bulb below.

NOTES:
  • The first two examples are assigned to anonymous learners to help recreate the learner experience of taking the escape room bulb. You may be redirected to a learner dashboard after taking these examples. Please log out from the learner dashboard, and then you can log in or launch PlayPosit as usual.
  • The third link is a preview link to an escape room template, and instructors can copy this bulb into their account and start building a digital escape room with it. Please see this article for more information about copying bulbs.

How to create a digital escape room?

Introduction slide for learners

Instructors can create an introduction slide at the beginning of the bulb to inform learners that this is a digital escape room bulb, and their objective is to find the clues hidden in the bulb to complete the bulb. Please follow the steps below to create the introduction slide.

  1. After importing the video, click on Add interaction at 00:00.
  2. Select the Pause interaction.

  3. Instructors can then type in the information and objective for this digital escape room bulb. Instructors can also utilize the rich text editor to format the text or add images to the interaction to make the introduction slide more appealing and accessible. Please see this article for more information about using the rich text editor for formatting and media upload.

  4. To let this pause interaction overlay on the video, click on Placement on the top and click on the center of the video area to make it overlay the entire video.

  5. (Optional) If the instructor wants to use the dark mode, please click Advanced and toggle on the Dark mode option.

Hide clues with feedback

The clues will be hidden in the feedback of the interactions, and learners will only see the clues if they answer the interaction correctly. Because the bulb needs to distinguish the correct answer and provide clues in real-time, manually graded free responses interaction will not work with the digital escape room bulb. The most suitable interaction types for the escape room bulb will be multiple choice and fill in the blank interaction. Please see more information about how to use these two interactions to provide clues to learners below.

Multiple choice:

  1. After entering the question and answer options, set the correct answer by clicking on the circle in front of it.

  2. Click on the gear icon behind the answer option, and select Add Feedback.

  3. Enter the feedback and clue in the input section.

  4. (Optional) Instructors can add feedback to each answer option by repeating steps 2 and 3.
  5. Click on Advanced and check the “ Hide correct answer if not select” option. Therefore learners won’t see the correct answer and clue until they answer this interaction correctly.

Fill in the blank:

  1. Type in the question, and click on Add Input Blank to insert the blank.

  2. Enter the correct answer for the blank. If there are multiple acceptable answers, please use commas to separate them. The answer is not case sensitive but spelling sensitive.

  3. Click on the gear icon behind the answer, and select Add Feedback.

  4. Enter the feedback and clue in the input section.

NOTES: Learners will see the feedback no matter whether they answer the fill in the blank interaction correctly or not. Instructors can consider making the clue related to the correct answer so that learners still need to know the correct answer to get the clue. Ex: The clue is the second letter of the correct answer.

Add a checkpoint

At the end of the bulb, please add a fill in the blank interaction for learners to enter the clues and see if they successfully complete this activity. Please follow the steps below to create this fill in the blank interaction.

  1. Type in the instructions to ask learners to enter the clues and click on Add Input Blank to insert the blank.
  2. Enter the correct answer for the blank.
  3. (Optional) Instructors can add up to 10 blanks to a fill in the blank interaction by clicking on the Add Input Blank. Please enter the corresponding answer to each clue in the input section below.

Allow learners to retake the bulb and set up a minimum completion score

Once all the interactions are set, the instructor will need to add a minimum completion score to check if the learner successfully completed the escape room. Also, the instructor will have to allow those learners that didn’t find all the clues to retake the bulb and try to collect the clues again. Please follow the steps below to turn on the allow retake function and set a minimum completion score for the bulb.

  1. Click on the Review tab, and expand the Playback options.
  2. Select the “Allow learners to retake the bulb upon completion” option, and select Save Changes.

  3. After the allow retake option is turned on, please click on the “ Do not mark bulb complete unless learner scores at least 100” option. The number is the percentage of the total points available in this bulb, and 100 means learners will need to answer all the questions correctly to mark this bulb as complete.
  4. Click on Save Changes again to save the progress.
NOTES: The  “ Do not mark bulb complete unless learner scores at least 100” option will not be selectable until the  “ Allow learners to retake the bulb upon completion” is on.
