What is a learner made bulb?

Learner-Made Bulbs (LMBs) are a great way to empower your learners to become the instructor. Learners have access to the full power of the PlayPosit Designer, including uploading their own videos and embedding all question types. You can use this feature to:

  • Review projects where learners create their own questions on video already seen.
  • Have learners create their own video and add interactions to increase engagement.
  • Record a learner's presentation and have them reflect on their performance with comments in-situ.

PlayPosit 3.0 introduces the ability for learners to share their bulbs with other learners (for Pro instructors) and will soon provide instructors who are part of an Institutional License with the ability for their learners to participate in Peer Review scenarios.

The instructor's experience

Creating a learner made bulb assignment

  1. From My Bulbs, click the arrow icon next to Add New Bulb, and then select Add Learner Made Bulb.
  2. The Add Learner Made Bulb dialog should appear, prompting you to enter a Title
    1. (Optional) You can also enter a Learning Objective/Instructions, but if you do not, PlayPosit will show a set of general instructions to your learners to inform them how to complete the assignment.
    2. (Optional) Click Advanced settings if you want to specially configure your Learner Made Bulb.
  3. Pro users and Institutional users will see different options under Advanced settings.
    1. Pro instructors will see options to:
      • Set Points - this is how many points the LMB assignment will be worth.
      • Allow learners to upload video files - If toggled on, learners can directly upload any video file to the Designer to use as a video source, but it will be counted against the Pro instructor's annual 100-minute quota.
      • Enable complete/incomplete grading - If toggled on, when learners submit their LMBs in the Designer, they will automatically receive full points.
      • Allow learners to share bulb with peers - If toggled on, after learners have submitted their LMBs in the Designer, they can come back to their Dashboard to get a link to share with other learners. This link will let their peers take the submitted LMB.
        • Allow learners to monitor peer responses - If toggled on, learners can see how their peers have responded to an LMB they have submitted.
        • Allow learners to monitor anonymous responses - If toggled on, learners can see how their peers have responded, but will not see their names.
    2. Institutional instructors will see options to:
      • Allow learners to upload video files - available for institutions whose contracts include private video hosting. If toggled on, learners can directly upload any video file to the Designer to use as a video source, but it will be counted against the institution's annual quota (depending on the institution's hosting package).
      • Enable complete/incomplete grading - If toggled on, when learners submit their LMBs in the Designer, they will automatically receive full points.

Assigning a learner made bulb

  1. Pro instructors and Institutional instructors who do not use an LMS should follow the instructions here.
  2. Institutional instructors who use an LMS should follow the instructions laid out here for their specific LMS.

Monitoring a learner made bulb

  1. If you're accessing PlayPosit from an LMS, click on your linked assignment, and then click Monitor on the grey screen.
    1. Otherwise, if you're accessing PlayPosit directly, navigate to My Bulbs, click on the thumbnail or triple dots icon of the bulb you're trying to monitor, select Monitor, and then choose the class for which you want to see data.
  2. When you've reached the gradebook for an LMB, you can do several things:
    1. Manually grade an LMB (learn more here).
    2. Unlock a submitted LMB so a learner can continue editing it.
    3. Preview a learner's LMB submission.
    4. Monitor other learner responses to a learner's LMB (Currently only enabled for Pro users who have enabled their learners to share LMBs with other learners).
    5. Copy a learner's LMB to My Bulbs.
  3. While reviewing an LMB instructors can also view the review sheet in a bulb. Please note this content will not show on LMB peer review submissions.

Within an LMS

When a learner clicks on an LMS assignment that is linked to a PlayPosit bulb, they will see a grey screen with the bulb name, some instructions, and a blue button labeled Create Bulb. To complete a Learner Made Bulb (LMB) assignment:

  1. Click Create Bulb to launch the Designer.
  2. Add a video to your bulb (more information here)
    1. If your instructor has enabled direct video upload, you will have the option to Upload or Record Video within the PlayPosit Designer.

  3. Add interactions to your bulb (more information here)
  4. When you're done, click on the Review tab and click Submit. You won't be able to return to the Designer after clicking Submit, so make sure that you're completely finished before doing so!

  6. The next time you launch your assignment from your LMS, you will have the option to Preview your submitted LMB.
